Wolff Preparing to Divest Stake Pricing Mercedes F1 at £4.6 Billion

Toto Wolff with Mercedes F1 team
Team Principal Wolff has led the Mercedes team to record-breaking success in Formula 1

Toto Wolff is engaged in advanced talks to sell part of his shareholding in the Mercedes Formula 1 team.

The deal estimates the Mercedes team at £4.6 billion – an unprecedented figure for an F1 team – following McLaren was appraised at £3.5 billion in an adjustment to corporate structure in September.

Wolff, who holds one-third of the Mercedes F1 operation, would sell a shareholding approximately 5%.

Wolff, aged 53 will remain as team principal and CEO should the deal proceed.

Shareholder Breakdown

Remaining partners in the team are Mercedes and chemicals giant Ineos, who each also own a third of the enterprise.

An official representative stated: "We are providing no comment on this. The governance of Mercedes F1 will remain unchanged, and each shareholder are dedicated to continued achievements of Mercedes-Benz in Formula One."

Valuation Increase

This arrangement signifies a substantial rise in worth of the Mercedes team since Ineos acquired its stake for £208 million in 2022.

The rise demonstrates the expansion in market values of F1 teams recently due to the increasing appeal of Formula 1 globally.

This was also seen in the box-office performance of the Formula 1 film featuring Hollywood star Brad Pitt, which debuted in summer 2023 and earned more than $630m (£458 million) at the box office.

The film represents Pitt's most successful film and the most successful sports film ever released.

Present Standings

The Mercedes team are runner-up in the constructors' championship, trailing McLaren Racing, with three races remaining this season.

Mercedes' primary racer George Russell has won two of the 21 grands prix so far and is fourth in the drivers' championship after McLaren drivers Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri, and Red Bull Racing's Max Verstappen.

Mercedes won a unprecedented eight consecutive constructors' championships and seven drivers' titles, six for Lewis Hamilton and one for Nico Rosberg, between 2014 and 2021.
