Roughly fifty cars have been covered with what seems to be human blood in the Germany's municipality of Hanau near Frankfurt, as reported by police.

Vehicles, exterior walls and mailboxes were defaced, in some cases with Nazi symbols, they reported in a official communication.

Law enforcement state they were alerted in the late hours on Wednesday night, when a individual observed that a car in the Lamboy district of Hanau had been marked with a red-colored liquid.

The fluid had been applied in the shape of a banned symbol, they stated.

Officers then located multiple other vandalized automobiles and house walls in the nearby vicinity.

Nazi symbols are illegal in Germany under legislation outlawing the visible presentation of Nazi-era symbols.

Officials state early analysis indicate the substance was likely blood from a person.

"Currently there is no clue as to its source; investigators are presently not cognizant of any injuries in connection with the event," they added.

City officials said they were trying "to solve the mystery" and have requested to the community for information.

A high-ranking official commented the attack made him without words and needed to be addressed quickly.

"This incident hits the core of Hanau and reopens the wounds of the extremist terrorist attack in 2020," he wrote on social media, referring to the killing of nine people by a gunman targeting people of migrant background in February 2020.
