Colombian Leader Declares 'I Would Resort to Weapons Once More' if US Launches an Attack.

President Trump and President Gustavo Petro have escalated the volume of their war of words, increasing tensions bilaterally following American military units targeted Venezuela in an operation to oust President Nicolás Maduro from office.

"He runs drug factories and cocaine factories and that won't last much longer," the US president stated.

Rising Rhetoric and Claims

Talking to journalists over the weekend, Trump hinted at similar military action against Colombia, claiming the country faces serious problems and “run by a sick man involved in producing cocaine and trafficking it to the United States."

While Colombia stands as the globe's biggest producer of cocaine, no proof exists that President Gustavo Petro, who was elected in 2022, is in any way involved in the business.

A Frayed Alliance

The country was historically a staunch collaborator of the United States in the struggle against drug trafficking and enjoyed cross-party backing in Washington, however, the relationship have worsened markedly since Trump was elected.

Colombia’s narcotics trade is mainly overseen by criminal organizations including the Golf Clan, the National Liberation Army (ELN) and renegade units of the former Farc guerrillas, the majority of whose members laid down arms subsequent to a 2016 peace deal.

The President's Firm Response

Upon being questioned if armed intervention comparable to Venezuela was a possibility regarding Colombia, Trump responded: "It sounds good to me."

President Petro, a former leftist guerrilla who disarmed in the 1990s, categorically refuted Trump's claims. "I am neither an illegitimate leader and certainly not a narco," he affirmed.

"Trump speaks uninformed. Cease defaming me," he posted in a post.

"Should American forces attack civilians, they will become numerous insurgents in the hills. If they capture me, which many of the country holds in high esteem, they will provoke the fierce spirit of the nation," Petro warned.

From Fighter to President

Petro spent some years as a young man as a member of the leftist M-19 armed organization though it is believed that he never participated in combat. After demobilizing, he participated in creating the constitutional rewrite in the early 90s subsequently becoming a prominent senator. He served as mayor of the capital city before winning the nation's highest office.

"I swore to never again hold a gun ... but in defense of my country I will take up weapons once more," he said.

Heightened Measures along with Broad Condemnation

Colombia's defense chief stated that the national leader's protection team was strengthened.

Many among Colombia’s right wing opposition have sided with Trump, however, leaders from across Colombian politics have condemned the threats of a US attack against their nation.

Diplomatic and Economic Sanctions

Washington withdrew the president's entry visa after he encouraged American soldiers to ignore unlawful commands. In October, authorities imposed financial sanctions against the president, his spouse and a number of close collaborators.

At the same time as the US increased its forces in the region and striking suspected drug boats against Venezuela’s Maduro, American military assets executed strikes on maritime targets in Pacific waters off the Colombian coast.
